                                    My Family Genealogy

I was born in New Zealand and consider myself a kiwi, but my parents were born and brought up in Fiji. Fijian Indians however originally came from different parts of India. They were brought to Fiji by British rulers between 1879 and 1916 to work on Fiji's sugar cane plantations.
My mums grandmothers story is very sad and unusual. She was born in India and lived with her husband and son.
One day while her husband was at work she decided to take a walk to the pier to see the big British ship that had arrived. Lots of people had gathered there and the British rulers asked them to get on the ship for a little cruise.
My great grandmother got in the ship with her son and and many other people. But she had no idea that she and everyone else on the ship were being tricked by the British rulers.
They were on a long, unexpected, unwanted journey to Fiji. A few people got so depressed that they jumped of the ship and committed suicide.
My great grandmother was very sad because she was happily married and had left her husband behind.
When they finally got to Fiji after many months they were asked to grab a partner. My great grandmother ended up with my great grandfather who hadn't been married before.
They were forced to work together on the farm for long hours with little food and little money.
They had six children and my grandmother(who is still alive) was the youngest.
My grandmother now lives in Christchurch. She was married at the age of 14 and had 10 children. My mother was the youngest.
My fathers grandfather came to Fiji by choice. They were living in very poor conditions in India and he thought in Fiji he would have a better life.
Not all Fijian Indians were tricked into coming to Fiji. Majority signed a 5 year contract called Girmit to work as laborers on the sugar cane farms.
My great grandfather worked hard in Fiji for 5 years then went back to India with his savings. He found his family living in even worse conditions and decided to go back to Fiji.
His mother was so worried that he would leave again.  So she used to tie him up at night.
He sneaked out one night leaving most of his savings behind. He returned to Fiji and married my great grandmother(from my fathers side). They had seven children. My grandfather was the eldest.
The Fijian Indians helped Fiji's economy grow by working hard on sugar cane plantations.
They started fighting for equal rights, but the Fijians weren't happy and started to take control of Fiji by force.
Many Indians started to leave Fiji in search of a better place to live.
This is why my parents are here today.
There are still lots of Indians in Fiji working on sugar cane farms dreaming of a better life one day.

For the design your own challenge I chose to take pictures and write about our Indian festival of lights, called Diwali.

Diwali (also called Divali or Deepavali)  is an Indian festival of lights Hindu's celebrate every year. The date of Diwali changes every year. Diwali lasts for five days.

Before Diwali starts we have to do Diwali cleaning. We clean every inch of the house.
We wear new traditional Indian clothes when Diwali starts.

We celebrate it by making our house as bright as possible by hanging lights and candles around our house. Outside and inside.

We also make lots of yummy Indian sweets to eat, and distribute with our friends. In return our friends give some of their Indian sweets.
On the last day of Diwali we pray to the gods and goddesses to protect us from any harm and to shower the blessings on us so we can live a happy and prosperous life.

These are some pictures of the candles

We placed the candles all around the house. On the coffee table and next to the front door inside.

This is my mum holding some candles

These are some of the pictures of the sweets in progress

These are some of the pictures of the finished sweets

This is a picture of me, my mum, one of my little sister's friends and my little sister all in our traditional Indian clothes.

Challenge no.F5

Sorry this video doesn't work.

Challenge no.F1

For the family Olympics we did a simple yet fun obstacle course.
The obstacles were.
  1. Run 3 laps around our backyard.
  2. 10 push-ups
  3. 10 squats
  4. 10 skips with skipping rope
We only had one skipping rope, so we gave it to one of competitors. If the skipping rope hit their knees, they had to pass it to the other competitor so they can try. This keeps going until one of them can do 10 skips without fail. The first one to do 10 skips without fail is the winner

Results:
I played against my mum. I won in the end. It was a close match.

My little sister played against my dad. My little sister won by a mile!

Now it was time for the finals.
I played against my little sister. My little sister gave up when I was on my second lap around our backyard, so I guess that means I WON.
